Mayor of Hawthorne, Larry Guidi, announced
that the first School-to-Career Center within the Hawthorne School District
would open this spring at Yukon Middle School.
The South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) (formerly the South Bay
Private Industry Council) will be providing the Yukon Center with twenty (20)
new high speed Pentium III computers and laser jet printers. The purpose of the School-to-Career Center
is to provide students with access to hands-on information about the world of
work. Students will be provided with
career assessment and exploration resources tailored to their development
level. “The Center is designed to
excite young people about future career opportunities and motivate them to stay
in school and achieve good grades,” said Mayor Guidi. Both teachers and students will have access to the Internet,
which will link them to information about high wage careers, technology and
workplace learning opportunities.
The latest of ten (10) School-to-Career
Centers in the South Bay Area, the Yukon Middle School-to-Career Center is part
of a 6-year federally funded grant, sponsored by the South Bay Workforce
Investment Board. The Yukon
Center will be open to students before, during and after school.
